Marathon runner Shewarge Amare Alene from Ethiopia has died after a training session in Addis Ababa. She was 30 years old. Alene participated in 27 marathons between 2011 and 2025. Alene won the Stockholm Marathon in May. The Stockholm Marathon organizers expressed deep sorrow and sent condolences to her family.
“It is with deep sorrow that we have received the news of the passing of Shewarge Alene, winner of adidas Stockholm Marathon 2025”, the organizers declared. “Shewarge Alene became unwell during a training session and was taken to hospital, where sadly, her life could not be saved. Shewarge Alene was 30 years old. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.”
Alene‘s personal best times were 1:07:43 hours in the half marathon, achieved in May 2022 in Konya; and 2:27:26 hours in the marathon, achieved in October 2023 in the Cape Town Marathon.
