Chile’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence (Cenia) has announced that it will coordinate a project, named LatamGPT to preserve Latin America’s multicultural identity. Cenia has the support of more than 30 institutions from Latin America and the Caribbean, and more than 60 experts from the region. The project will be launched in mid-2025, the Tico Times reported.
Cenia is a research center funded by the Chilean government and private institutions, located in Santiago, Chile. The Center was founded by four of the main national universities: PUC, U. de Chile, UTFSM, and UAI, with a mission to be at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation in AI, serving as a core component of the Chilean National Policy for AI.
“When we talk about Artificial Intelligence, it must project the world we are, its diversity. And in Latin America’s case, not just speak Spanish or Portuguese, but understand our identity, contribute from our culture and worldview,” the Chilean Science Minister Aisén Etcheverry is quoted by Tico Times.
According to Etcheverry “LatamGPT will be open, which means it will allow more people in Latin America and the Caribbean to study, use, and improve it, building upon it.” LatamGPT references the conversational robot ChatGPT developed by the U.S. company OpenAI.
